Despite accounts of a relatively simple case, the 2016 trial surrounding a deadly highway collision was neither quick nor typical.
The fatal crash examined during the trial occurred when a van driven by defendant, Brett Lee Lease ran into the back of another vehicle, causing it to spin out of control and trigger a string of accidents. The plaintiff, Jeremy Iocozzia, was struck by said vehicle and sustained brain, neck, face, and back injuries as a result. The subsequent trial ran five weeks before both parties rested their cases and the jury was able to deliberate. The duration has been attributed in part to defense attorneys, Colella and Zefutie's drawn out cross-examination of accident witnesses. Ultimately the jury sided with Iocozzia, as there was no evidence that the defendant made any effort to brake or slow down prior to the collision. The plaintiff was awarded $1.8 million to cover medical costs as well as lost income - an outcome which his attorney described as both gratifying and relieving.
