How to protect yourself on a motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle can be exhilarating and relaxing, but not all riders know how to protect themselves. There are plenty of safety measures you can take to help prevent injuries when riding. Injuries on motorcycles can happen because of accidents or the inexperience of the motorcycle rider. They can also be caused by the failure of the motorcycle to operate properly. Here are some tips to stay safe.

If you are new to riding a motorcycle, it is in your best interest to take a defensive driving class tailored for motorcycle riders. This class will teach you how to stay safe on the roads, how to properly handle the bike and how to react accordingly should an incident unfold in front of you on the road.

Learn the ins and outs of your motorcycle. This can be done by reading the owner's manual, talking to other bike owners, watching videos online and practicing how to operate the bike on your street or in an empty parking lot.

Only ride in the best conditions possible in order to stay safe. This includes dry conditions, during the daytime and with excellent visibility. Avoid riding in the rain, if there are a lot of leaves on the road and at night.

Wear protective clothing when riding your motorcycle. This includes a helmet, even if not required by law where you are riding. Wear goggles, long pants, a long-sleeve shirt and gloves when riding. These items will help prevent your skin from being ripped off should you skid across the road. Never wear open-toed shoes such as flip flops or sandals when riding. Wear boots, especially ones that can be zipped shut instead of tied.

Avoid swerving from lane to lane when on your bike and keep it at the speed limit. Weaving in and out of traffic can be a recipe for disaster.
