18 people hurt in massive accident

Traffic on Maryland's stretch of Interstate 95 was backed up for at least four miles by a massive, six-car crash that saw 18 people head to local hospitals. There were so many injured that they wound up at five different medical facilities. The emergency crews that responded called the accident a "mass casualty incident."

No one was killed in the accident. Reports even indicated that none of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.

The accident happened just before 2:00 p.m. on April 23. The Maryland Transportation Authority had already pulled a car over, and they were stopped on the highway's left shoulder. The highway was already congested and traffic wasn't moving quickly. However, a 2016 Ford Transit then slammed into the back of a Lincoln MKS, knocking that vehicle forward until it hit a Lexus IS30C.

There was another Ford Transit in traffic, which was then hit by the Lexus. That shoved the second Transit into a Volkswagen Passat, which smashed into a Hummer H3.

As the dust cleared, four of the cars were sitting together, blocking the highway. The others were off to the side, on the shoulder. That's when traffic started backing up for miles.

Charges are pending against the driver who caused the whole accident. He is a 36-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York.

A chain-reaction accident can be completely impossible to avoid, and all it takes is one small mistake to set it off. If you're hurt in such a crash and find yourself facing high medical bills, it may be wise to look into your rights to compensation.
