Collision claims tow truck driver's life in Cecil County

Interstate highways are often the fastest way to get around and through Maryland. Dense or unexpected highway conditions, however, can reduce safety and cause serious injuries or death.

A driver on I-95 in Cecil County lost control of his car and collided with a tow truck, a pedestrian and another car stopped on the side of the highway. The incident closed down traffic for hours.

The accident was fatal for the tow truck driver, a 51-year-old Cecil County volunteer firefighter, retired from a professional force. He had been loading the car onto his tow truck during the collision.

"It's heartbreaking for everybody involved," said Chief Brian Jones, chief of the victim's fire company. "He was a great guy, all around nice guy, would do anything for you, give you the shirt off his back."

The Cecil County Sheriff's Department released a message of sympathy and condolence on Twitter. The tweet also included the reminder that drivers have two responsibilities when they see emergency lights stopped ahead -- "move over and slow down."

Interstate highways, as well as busy commercial roads with multiple lanes, are host to a variety of driving, loading and parking activities. Danger increases with the different types and speed of vehicles that are involved in a small area.

Police have yet to comment on the driver's liability and the investigation continues. In accidents in which liability is involved, victims of motor vehicle collisions may be entitled to compensation or reimbursement for medical expenses during recovery.

If you or a relative have been injured in a car accident, consult a legal representative with experience in personal injury cases who can help you weigh your options within the legal system.
