Important tips for pedestrian safety in Maryland

Pedestrians take their lives in their hands each time they put foot to pavement. No matter how many safety measures pedestrians put into place when walking, there's still the possibility of being hit by a car, truck, SUV or motorcycle. Here are some important tips for pedestrian safety in Maryland.

Pedestrians should make themselves as visible as possible to all types of vehicular traffic, even if they are walking in a well-lit area. Reflective clothing is vital to your safety. If you do not have reflective clothing, wear bright colors during your walk or run.

Do not go on a walk or run while distracted. Even though you might do these past-times to "get away" or relax, distractions can lead to accidents. Don't use your phone for calls or texts while walking or running near vehicles. You could become distracted enough to walk right out into traffic.

Pedestrians are required to obey all traffic laws just like vehicles. This includes using crosswalks and not jaywalking, following traffic signals and walk signs and not darting out into traffic. Even though there are instances where pedestrians have the right of way over vehicles, it's best to never assume a vehicle will provide you the right of way.

When walking or running, it's best to stay on sidewalks whenever possible. This will move you further away from the motoring public than if you were on the shoulder of the road.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a Maryland pedestrian accident, contact our firm to discuss your case and find out the next steps in recovering compensation for your injuries.
