Summer is in full swing with holiday weekends drawing record numbers of drivers to the roads of Maryland. Police patrols are catching up for safety to raise awareness of the dangers of car accidents and driving under the influence.
Sources report around 940,000 Maryland drivers were expected to take to the road during the July 4th weekend, 2.9 percent more than in 2016. Authorities deployed checkpoints and new Breathalyzer technology to protect commuters and vacationers on their way through the state.
Highway congestion makes any driver grumpy and these conditions become more likely when more Maryland residents and Washington, D.C., residents head for vacation weekends. Maryland's state highway administrator had some helpful tips for avoiding frustration.
-- Be patient. Congestion is usually caused by a high volume of drivers. Speeding increases the chances of an expensive citation as well as a dangerous collision.
-- Make a plan. Think about alternate routes and times to travel that would avoid congested highways or danger-prone roads.
-- Leave early, stay late. Avoid times of likely congestion by traveling earlier or later in the day, and give a trip more time with fair expectations.
There are times when accidents are unavoidable. Distracted drivers can change lanes without signaling or fail to stop in time to avoid a collision. Drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol may lose control of a vehicle and cause hazards in an unpredictable way.
If you were injured or suffered property damage as the result of a motor vehicle collision, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages or other considerations related to the incident.
