15-year-old killed in Maryland pedestrian accident

It is rare that motor vehicles strike people in the street, as drivers are generally vigilant of any danger to the world around them and pedestrians stick to sidewalks and other safer areas. The odds of a serious injury or death if a pedestrian is involved in a car crash, however, is one of the highest among motor vehicle accidents.

Pedestrians have the least protection of anyone on the road, and are afforded no protection if they are struck by a car or truck. Fatal pedestrian accidents are all too common among traffic incidents, with inattentive drivers on the rise with more vehicles and distractions on the road.

A small town in Maryland is currently mourning a 15-year-old boy who was killed after being struck by a car after sunset last week. Police say an initial investigation shows the boy was in the road and the driver did not see him in time to stop.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. There are currently no charges and it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were involved in the incident, but Maryland State Police continue to investigate the death.

Drivers and pedestrians alike must be extra careful on the roads at sunrise, at sunset and after dark. It is far more difficult to see obstructions and hazards, and collisions per vehicle on the road go up - especially in urban areas - during these dangerous hours.

Victims of pedestrian accidents and their families are entitled to report the incident to law enforcement and seek criminal and civil charges against an at-fault driver.
