Drunk driving suspected in Maryland construction worker death

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is always illegal and often tragic. One out of every three highway deaths in the United States also involves drunk driving. In 2015, for example, there was an alcohol-related traffic fatality in the country every 51 minutes. Sadly, one of these deaths occurred on a Maryland road recently.

A Baltimore construction worker was killed and another injured after a tragic motor vehicle accident that may have involved driving under the influence of alcohol. The 56-year-old man died after being hit in Anne Arundel County and transported for care to a University of Maryland Medical Center facility.

The victim and a fellow construction worker were closing a lane on the highway by placing traffic cones when a woman drove her pickup truck into the lane being closed. She struck both men and, although she avoided injury herself, was taken for an alcohol test by Anne Arundel County Police. The other worker also suffered serious injuries upon being struck.

More than 7,000 deaths occurred at road construction sites in the seven years up to 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and nearly 1,000 of them were road construction workers. Nearly half of all construction worker deaths were due to being struck by a motor vehicle or piece of heavy machinery.

This danger is compounded by drunk driving, which can often be mitigated with geographically-targeted traffic stops and checks. Underage drivers and repeat offenders are specifically targeted by anti-drunk driving campaigns. Victims of drunk driving accidents should report incidents to local law enforcement and consider their legal options for claiming compensation.
