How often do escalator and elevator fatalities happen?

Did you know that 17,000 people suffer injuries in elevator and escalator accidents each year in the United States. If you use an elevator every day at work or during your normal activities, you might be surprised at this statistic -- especially if you tend to take your safety for granted while climbing aboard one of these extremely useful contraptions.

Issues relating to U.S. elevator and escalator safety become even more disturbing when they learn that 30 people die annually from accidents related to the devices. Elevators are to blame for 90 percent of these fatalities and for 60 percent of the serious injuries.

Half of the elevator deaths happen to workers who are doing their jobs close to elevator shafts. Also, many elevator-related deaths occurred after an individual fell inside an elevator shaft. There have also been many incidents of deaths and serious injury after an individual was caught up within the moving parts of an elevator.

To prevent elevator and escalator accidents, workers and employers should:

  • Take appropriate safety precautions and receive safety training.
  • Inspect and maintain elevators.
  • Only employ qualified workers to repair and maintain escalators.

When an elevator or escalator accident results in the injury of a visitor to a Maryland property, the owner of the property may be financially liable for the incident. The owner may be legally bound to pay money to the injured party as compensation for his or her medical care, time spent unable to do his or her job, pain and suffering, court costs, attorneys' fees and other financial damages relating to the injuries.
