How to safely drive your car near a large truck

Getting behind the wheel of your car or SUV in Maryland is a privilege and not a right. This is a mantra that you've likely heard since the day you started to learn how to drive. Safety is an important part of the driving experience, not just yours but that of those around you. It's never easy to think that other drivers will be just as safe as you. Here are some tips for driving safely near large trucks.

When passing a large truck or bus, be sure to give yourself plenty of room. You don't want to pass too closely to the larger vehicle because it could wind up clipping the rear of yours. If this happens, your vehicle could be sent into a tailspin, could be flipped or could be run off the side of the road.

Blind spots are a big problem when it comes to driving near large trucks and buses in Maryland. These vehicles have blind spots on all four sides, not just on the right or left sides of the vehicles. If you follow too closely to a truck, the driver will not be able to see you. If you allow a truck to tailgate you, you could wind up in a blind spot.

Trucks and buses make wide right turns. If you are sitting at an intersection and see a large vehicle approaching for a right turn, it's best to leave plenty of room for the vehicle to make the turn safely. Even if this means you have to put the car into reverse at the intersection, do so safely to provide the truck with plenty of room to turn.
