Local TV station owner dies after bicycle struck by truck

American roads support a great number of vehicles, as well as a diverse group of vehicle types from tractor-trailer to bicycle. Laws govern their cooperation and the good will of drivers of all types help keep us safe on the road.

Bicycles are at particular risk to motor vehicle collisions. The thin profile of bikes make them more difficult to see from behind the windshields of cars and trucks, and they offer no protection in the case of a collision. Even minor collisions can cause grave injuries or even fatalities.

Dawn and dusk are dangerous times for bicyclists as well, since the indirect light makes hazards harder to spot for drivers, riders and pedestrians alike. It was just after dawn that tragedy occurred for a bike rider and pillar of the community.

The owner of a prominent Maryland television station died after being struck by a truck while riding his bicycle on a rural road on the Delmarva Peninsula. The 76-year-old was hit just after 7:30 in the morning by a 37-year-old driving a pickup truck in the same direction.

The driver immediately stopped and called 911, according to state police reports. No charges have yet been filed and drug or alcohol abuse is not currently suspected by investigators. The victim was taken to a local hospital and airlifted to shock trauma center in Baltimore, where he died a day after the collision.

Victims of vehicle collisions and their families may be eligible for reimbursement of medical expenses or compensation for lost income, funeral expenses and other related costs if a driver is found at fault in an accident. Legal representation can help determine what victims are entitled.
