Driver guilty of grossly negligent manslaughter after car crash

A driver was recently found guilty of causing the death of a 66-year-old woman in a fatal head-on collision. Court records indicate that the 32-year-old man was fleeing police when he struck the woman in the wrong-way collision. He was convicted of grossly negligent manslaughter.

The 32-year-old, who hails from Woodlawn, was convicted by the Annapolis court on a recent Wednesday. In addition to grossly negligent manslaughter, the man was convicted of other charges relating to the tragic April 2016 incident, which happened in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

According to police, a state trooper attempted to stop the man for speeding. However, he drove away and refused to stop his vehicle. The car chase ended in tragedy approximately four miles down the road. The man hit the 66-year-old woman in a head-on collision. The woman died as a result of her injuries.

The fleeing driver has been convicted, but the court has yet to sentence him. It's likely that he will spend many years behind bars as a result of the conviction. His sentencing hearing will take place in January.

Whenever police engage in a high-speed pursuit, it places the public at risk. There's always a balance that police must achieve -- between enforcing the law and keeping the public safe. When police carry out their jobs in a way that risks the public unreasonably and results in injury or death, there is always the question of liability due to police negligence. There is also the question of liability when a fleeing driver kills someone due to his or her gross negligence.

In cases where a Maryland resident dies in an auto collision due to the negligence or unlawful activity of another party -- regardless of who the at-fault party is -- surviving family members may wish to investigate whether the at-fault party may be held liable via a wrongful death action.
