Pedestrian safety: It's time to make our roads safer

It's hard to believe, but one pedestrian dies in a traffic accident every two hours in the United States. Between the years of 2003 and 2012, a total of 47,025 pedestrians died in our country. An additional 676,000 were injured.

Communities have tried to bring pedestrian death statistics down to more manageable levels, but they haven't had much success. Drivers seem to be more distracted than ever, paying increasingly less attention to the road, and more attention to their smartphones. When you combine this with the fact that cities and towns have not been made to be "pedestrian friendly" but rather "car friendly," you have a recipe for disaster in terms of pedestrians safety.

It doesn't matter who's at fault: A death is a death

A fatal accident could be caused a careless pedestrian who walks into the street, a careless motorist who updates his or her Facebook account or a careless road engineer who doesn't consider pedestrians safety when designing a Maryland road. Ultimately, though, it doesn't matter who's at fault. What matters is that someone is dead, and we need to learn -- as a society -- how to prevent those deaths.

It's time to bring more attention to pedestrian safety

Human beings are made to walk. It's our natural form of transportation, but right now, doing the natural thing we were intended to do is more dangerous than ever. Perhaps the only way to overcome the dire safety problems faced by pedestrians is to bring more attention to the problem of pedestrian safety. One way of doing that is to file lawsuits to hold negligent, inattentive and unlawful drivers accountable and financially liable for the deaths and injuries they cause.
