Get rid of dangerous and slippery ice with these tips

Business owners need to keep their premises free of slippery ice during the winter months in Maryland because failing to do so could result in an injurious or catastrophic accident. It could also result in the business owner being financially liable to pay for the accident victim's medical care and other damages.

Here's how business owners can keep their sidewalks, parking lots and properties free of icy dangers:

Get prepared: You're clearing away ice for the safety of your customers, but you want to be safe as well. Stretch out your arms and legs before you take to the ice because you'll need good reflexes and agility. Also, put on warm clothes because it will probably be cold out there.

Get rid of the snow: First, you'll want to clear away excess snow from walking areas. This will allow you to access the ice that's underneath the snow. Many people make the mistake of only removing snow, while the ice builds up to create a slippery hazard underneath.

Lay down the ice melt: Ice melt is easy to find. There are many varieties, but the most important thing to do is to pick a reputable brand and see if it works. Follow the instructions, and spread out the ice melt. You probably won't need to use as much as you think, and you can save money by following the directions on the package and not overdoing it.

Get the thick ice under control: Sometimes thicker ice will persist despite the ice melt. You can use a shovel or pick to break this up and haul it away from the walking area.

Put down some more ice melt: After everything is cleared up, you might want to throw down just a little bit more ice melt for good measure to take care of any remaining bits.

You should now have an ice-free walking area, and your customers should be exponentially safer. In the event that a customer visits a business or property -- and slips on ice resulting in an injury -- the injured party may or may not have a claim for damages. As such, it's important to evaluate the liability of a property owner based on the unique facts and circumstances of the particular accident.
