I-95 in Maryland closed by wind-related truck accident

Trucks are the lifeblood of shipping, retail and countless other industries on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States and beyond. Maryland, a state where many supply chains and types of transport come together, knows the value of trucks and shipping more than many other states.

Truck safety is vitally important, not only for the scheduled delivery of goods and services, but also to ensure the safety of the truckers and other motorists nearby. The Old Line State is well-known for the number of interstates, highways and other limited-access roads criss-crossing it. Contained in this small area penetrated by numerous streams, rivers and bays, the bridges that span these waterways can be particularly hazardous during periods of inclement weather.

Winds and slippery road conditions can often worsen in the winter months, making truck safety a more complicated goal. Truck drivers need to take special care when driving in windy and icy weather.

A tractor-trailer recently overturned on a bridge forming a portion of Interstate 95 over the Susquehanna River between Cecil and Harford Counties in northern Maryland. The incident occurred when the bridge was under full wind restrictions, under which light and empty trucks are meant to take alternate routes.

The truck landed across multiple lanes after 50 mph winds flipped the trailer off its wheels. Recovery crews were forced to drag the truck off the bridge while it was still on its side in order to reopen the highway.

Victims of truck accidents in bad weather and other conditions can claim financial restitution for damage and injuries caused by at-fault drivers. An attorney may be able to help people who have been injured in accidents determine the best legal way forward.
