How do truck drivers get distracted on the roads?

Truck Driver POV.jpg

Tractor-trailers are an important part of the economy in Maryland and throughout the country. The more of them you see, the better the economy is performing. They are also some of the most dangerous vehicles on the roads. Their size and weight make it very difficult to stop on a dime and easier to rollover during a crash. A common cause of truck accidents is distracted driving. So, how do truck drivers get distracted when behind the wheel?

The No. 1 cause of truck driver distraction is focusing on things outside of the truck that are unrelated to driving. This includes a driver putting focus on other people, other vehicles, billboards, buildings and many other items. Anything that takes a driver's eyes off the road is a distraction.

Truck drivers also become distracted if they text while driving, which is illegal for commercial drivers no matter where they drive. Texting not only takes the driver's eyes off the road but also their hands off the wheel. Texting also puts the mind's focus on the message being sent and not the task of driving.

Trucks have dispatching devices installed in them so drivers can keep in touch with their employer. These devices can become distracting while driving. Many truck drivers will talk on the dispatching device while driving, leading to accidents.

Many truck drivers will eat and drink while operating their rig in an effort to arrive at their intended destination quicker. It's safer to take a break and eat lunch or dinner, not try to eat while driving.

Being injured in a truck accident can change your life. You should consider legal action surrounding your case in an effort to recover damages for injuries suffered in Montgomery County, Maryland.
