Facts about drunk driving accidents in Maryland

Drunk driving accidents claim dozens upon dozens of Maryland lives each year. Even when a fatality does not occur, victims of drunk driving accidents often face catastrophic injuries that are sometimes life-changing. Recovery is lengthy, painful and expensive, leaving victims in dire need of financial assistance.

Despite rigorous DUI prevention campaigns, it seems obvious that drunk driving accidents are going to remain a nationwide problem. To gain a clearer perspective on the problem in Maryland alone, take a look at a few facts. The statistics below are for the years 2003 through 2012.

-- Nearly 2,000 people perished in Maryland due to alcohol-involved accidents between 2003 and 2012.

-- In a 30-day period, over 2 percent of the state's motorists reported driving after consuming too much alcohol.

-- Out of every 100,000 males, 4.1 died in a drunk driving accident in 2012.

-- Out of every 100,000 females, 1.4 died in a drunk driving accident in 2012.

-- The most drunk driving accident deaths of 2012 occurred in the 21 to 34 age group.

While prevention strategies like sobriety checkpoints and mandatory ignition interlock devices do work to prevent some drunk driving accidents, more work is clearly necessary. Victims can share in the prevention responsibility by holding the at-fault parties to account. This means filing wrongful death or personal injury claims when applicable.

Unfortunately, punishing the offenders and hitting them in their bank accounts are often the best way to make them think twice about their actions. If you are wondering how to move forward after your accident, consider asking an attorney for advice.
