String of motorcycle crashes accompanies Ocean City BikeFest

A motorcyclist is dead and other motorcyclists have been hurt following a string of five accidents in the Mid-Shore area. The tragedies coincide a dramatic increase in motorcycle traffic resulting from the annual Ocean City BikeFest, which started Sept. 14 and came to a close on Sept. 17 last week.

According to the Maryland State Police's public information officer, the large number of motorcycle crashes, unfortunately, is to be expected. He said that having this many motorcycles on the road will usually result in more motorcycle crashes. He said that it makes sense when thousands of motorcyclists are coming together in one spot.

Maryland State Police say that the first accident happened on Sep. 15. They reported to an accident on U.S. Route 50 in Linkwood. The female rider on the bike rear-ended another car at approximately 2 p.m.

Two hours after the first crash, a motorcycle collision happened along Route 331 in Preston. This incident required the 43-year-old motorcyclist to be life-flighted to the University of Maryland Shock & Trauma Center.

More accidents happened as the festival came to a close on Sept. 17, when thousands of participants went home. On Sept. 17, another accident happened on U.S. Route 50 near Cordova. In this instance, a motorcyclist's bike fell on the road causing two other bikers to collide with the rider. This resulted in three riders being flown to Shock & Trauma in Baltimore.

During the early evening hours on Sept. 17, a motorcyclist made a left turn into the path of a second biker -- close to a U.S. Route 50 intersection in Cambridge. The second biker, a 40-year-old man, was rushed to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester, but he later died at the medical facility.

There were other bike crashes and injuries involving motorcyclists who enjoyed the Ocean City BikeFest. As with all motorcycle accidents, the victims and surviving close family members may want to investigate how the events occurred to determine if a viable claim for financial damages can be made.
