Rules that every pool owner should institute

Swimming pools represent a serious drowning risk for adults and children alike. In order to minimize these risks as much as possible, every Maryland pool owner should consider setting some rules, and posting them so visitors can read them.

Here are the pool rules every pool owner should post:

  • All toys need to be out of the pool, put in their place and not close to the pool when they're not being used.
  • If it's a blow-up pool, you should empty it immediately after you're done using it.
  • Toys that you can ride, like bicycles, tricycles, skateboards and other items should be kept far away from the pool, and no one should use them near the pool.
  • Electrical appliances should be far from the pool.
  • Do not dive in a pool that isn't deep enough for safe, risk-free diving.
  • Never run along the edge of the pool.
  • A pool fence must be installed around the pool -- one the completely contains the pool -- to prevent children from falling in and drowning. The fence doors should always remain locked.

As a final note, all pool owners should ensure that everyone who lives in their homes or frequents their homes learns how to swim. Professional swimming instruction is the best way to safely get someone swimming fast.

Did you or someone you know suffer a pool-related injury? Did your son or daughter drown in a pool-related incident? You may want to investigate your legal rights and options regarding the pursuit of a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit related to the incident.
