Malloy News Brief: Maryland Illegal Car Rallies

Vehicular crimes have been on a steady rise since the year 2020. This means organized crime; carjacking rings of growing sophistication and ambition. But this also means more individual crimes; joyriding and street racing. So-called “takeovers,” where mobs of reckless hooligan motorists turn public roads into their personal playgrounds, have become a quick ticket to transient viral fame for many young gearheads. New trends in crime inevitably lead to new tactics in policing. A coordinated operation by Maryland police in Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George’s counties has drawn a hard line against reckless driving to begin 2026. Today’s Malloy news brief will give you the full story on this targeted strike against Maryland illegal car rallies.

Safe and Sane Motoring Keeps Our Streets Safe

As steadfast advocates for the rights of injured motorists, we here at Malloy Law are sensitive to the rights of motorists to enjoy their vehicles as they please. We’ve previously published a guide to illegal car modifications to ensure that the hobbyist mechanics in our communities can customize their prized vehicles without fear of falling afoul of state of municipal laws. Its enduring popularity as one of our most-visited blog posts is a testament to the DMV’s vibrant car culture. If this culture is to be preserved and passed down to new generations, it cannot become a culture of illegal hooliganism. Street racing and other illegal exhibition driving is a public nuisance and health hazard. If you want speed, smoke, g-forces, and screaming tires, keep it on the track. Support your local racetrack, and ride responsibly.

The life you save may be your own. It should go without saying that this sort of behavior would undoubtedly breach Maryland and Virginia’s Contributory Negligence statutes, and bar an injured driver or passenger from any chance of recovery for injury, lost wages, or ongoing trauma.
