The ongoing winter deep freeze makes it a wonderful time to have a fireplace. While modern homes and apartments can regulate their temperature through more modern HVAC systems, wood-burning fireplaces can still be found in old construction homes. The cozy warmth and domesticity of a wood fireplace is more than worth its inconvenience for many homeowners. However, unsafe operation of a fireplace can quickly turn catastrophic. Two recent fires in two separate Maryland towns, both linked to chimneys, have drawn more attention to this issue. Today’s Malloy News Brief will cover these recent Maryland chimney fires.
On Sunday, February 1st in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews responded to reports of an apartment fire in the 400 Block of Ridgepoint Place. While initially reported as a chimney fire, the actual cause was found to be improperly disposed of ashes left on the balcony, which activated a nearby sprinkler pipe. All occupants of the apartment were reported as safe, and no injuries were reported.
In an unrelated incident in Edgewood, a chimney fire quickly spread to the attic of a residential home, causing $200K in damages. Nearly fifty firefighters from both professional and volunteer fire companies contained the blaze after twenty minutes. The residents of the home were simply enjoying a fire in their fireplace when they heard a sudden popping noise, followed by smoke. Two adults have been displaced by the blaze, and are currently receiving assistance from the local Red Cross.
Many chimney fires are begun by neglect on the part of homeowners or landlords. Failure to clean a chimney on an annual basis can result in a buildup of creosote, a sort of flammable paste of tar vapor biproducts.
Additionally, tenants need to understand that carelessness affects both parties. Tenants may be held liable for any damages if they are found to be at fault for the fire. Tenants should purchase as much renter’s insurance as they can afford, according to Malloy Law. This will lessen the monetary losses caused by any unanticipated events.
