The crash occurred at approximately 5:25 a.m. on August 4 at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Clopper Road. According to Montgomery County Police, a 2015 Kia Optima was traveling northbound on Great Seneca Highway when it entered the intersection and collided with a 2007 Toyota Matrix traveling eastbound on Clopper Road. The 58-year-old driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that a 13-year-old boy was driving the Kia. Six additional juveniles were inside the vehicle, bringing the total number of children in the car to seven. They ranged in age from 12 to 15 years old, and none were old enough to legally drive. The 13-year-old driver was initially hospitalized in critical but stable condition, while the other juveniles were transported to area hospitals with injuries of varying severity.
Police said the Kia had been stolen from a Germantown residence. Authorities also received a report of erratic driving in the area before the collision occurred. The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit has been investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, and potential charges had not been announced in the initial aftermath.
More recent reporting indicates that two juveniles, including the alleged 13-year-old driver, remained hospitalized in critical condition nearly a week after the collision, although police said both had been stabilized and were expected to survive. Investigators were still working to interview the hospitalized juveniles and gather evidence before presenting their findings to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
