One Maryland man’s bad decision has resulted in immediate and dramatic consequences as after a collision with a State Police Cruiser while driving under the influence, he has been arrested and charged. This week’s Malloy news brief will give the full account of this Gaithersburg DUI collision.
At roughly 9:20 PM on Sunday, March 22, 2026, Montgomery County police along with fire and rescue services and Maryland Department of Transportation highway administration personnel responded to reports of a car colliding with a state police cruiser in the vicinity of a work zone on I-270 Southbound, near Watkins Mill Road. The cruiser had been deployed to construct the work zone, and the trooper was in the vehicle at the time of the collision. The driver of the Honda, 35 year old Job David Martinez, attempted to flee the scene after the collision but was intercepted and detained by a second trooper who was also in the work zone at the time of the incident.
The trooper in the struck vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital for unspecified injuries sustained in the accident. He has since been released.
An average of 37 Americans lose their lives in drunk driving accidents every day, according to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). That translates to one death every 39 minutes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 13,524 persons lost their lives in traffic accidents involving drivers who had an unlawful blood alcohol content in 2022. 2,337 more people lost their lives in collisions with drivers whose blood alcohol content was between 0.01 and 0.07. This indicates that around 37% of all traffic fatalities that year were caused by drunk driving.
These figures are startling, but they become much more so when we take into account that only a small portion of all drunk driving events result in these deaths. One million people are arrested for driving while intoxicated in the US each year, according to data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, even that number does not adequately represent the number of Americans who intentionally put their lives in danger by driving while intoxicated.
Drunk driving is not just dangerous, it’s entirely preventable. Each one of us can be part of the solution.
