Malloy News Brief: Montgomery County Bike Lane Law

In the last decade, municipalities across America have taken steps to expand and improve bike infrastructure. It makes sense in many places. Traffic is a consistent complaint across the US and bike lanes are a cost-effective way to offer an alternative to the traditional car commute. The development of train or even bus networks can take years of planning and vast sums of money. Bike lanes are cost effective and can be voted through legislative bodies and set up in the course of a few months. However, the rise of bike lanes doesn’t always mean motorists adjust their behavior to accommodate cyclists. Montgomery county is staying the course with cyclist friendly urban design and cracking down on driver abuse of bike lanes. Today’s Malloy news brief will inform our readers about the new Montgomery County bike lane law which will punish drivers that block cyclists.

New Montgomery County Bike Lane Law

This new law is fairly simple. Montgomery County police are now empowered to issue $60 fines to any driver caught parking or even stopping in a bike lane. County officials believe this stricter program of enforcement will protect cyclists from the risk of collisions with drivers. In the first nine months of 2025, the county saw 115 such incidents, resulting in six seriously injured cyclists and one fatality.

County government officials, as well as advocacy groups for cyclist safety and student safety, have spoken favorably of the new enforcement regime and it should go without saying that we here at Malloy Law hope that our neighbors that choose to commute or exercise on two wheels will remain safe on the roads.

If You’ve Been Involved in a Bicycle Collision

First and foremost, check for injuries. If anyone is seriously injured, call 911 immediately.

If both of you are able to stand, exchange insurance information and contact numbers. It’s also a good idea to get witnesses’ information in case there is a dispute later on.

Take photos of the scene if possible, including any damage to your bicycle or the car involved.

File a police report, even if the injuries seem minor. This will create a record of the accident in case there are any complications later on.

It’s also a good idea to consult with an experienced personal injury lawyer to discuss your legal options and whether you may be entitled to compensation.
