Malloy News Brief: Prince George’s County Fatal Crashes
Last week, a pair of crashes in Prince George’s County each resulted in three fatalities apiece. This tragic flare up in vehicular fatalities casts a pall over what has otherwise been a year of positive trends in PG county road safety. Fatal crashes are so far down 25% year over year, but as the families of those unfortunate six motorists and passengers caught in this tragedy can attest, even one death on the road is too many. Prince George’s County Fatal Crashes – July 2026
The first of these two crashes took place at roughly 11:30 PM in Adelphi, on New Hampshire Avenue in the vicinity of Metzerott Road. A vehicle attempting to make a left turn in northbound traffic collided with a motorcycle and another vehicle. The motorcyclist and the driver and passenger in one of the vehicles died at the scene. The two occupants of the other vehicle were rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In the second crash, the driver of a rideshare vehicle failed to yield to a motorcycle carrying two passengers traveling south on Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. The resultant crash killed both the rideshare passenger and both riders on the motorcycle.
The Future of Traffic Safety in PG County
When asked for comment on these tragic incidents, PG County Police Chief George Nader said that the data suggests that traditional traffic enforcement by police radio cars provides no apparent deterrent effects against the reckless driving behaviors which often cause these severe or fatal accidents. However, early returns from automated enforcement systems such as stop sign, red light, and speed cameras suggest that this new technology may have more success in motivating drivers to modify their behaviors. This technology will serve a vital role in the county’s “Road to Zero” initiative. A sixty-point action plan designed to eliminate traffic deaths in the county by 2040.
