Malloy News Brief: Reduced Traffic Deaths in the DMV Region

The staff at Malloy Law Offices is proud to inform and educate our readers on issues of public safety and personal injury law. It allows us to speak about our work in a way that will prove useful to potential clients in their hour of need, as well as providing utility to anyone curious about these issues. However, a steady diet of research and writing about car accidents, slip and fall injuries, and other everyday tragedies, can result in a bleak outlook. We’re aware of this, and so when we get the opportunity to relay good news, we jump on it. Today’s Malloy News Brief will highlight a sharp drop-off in traffic deaths in our region, a statistic that we can all feel proud of, because we all play a part in shaping it.

Malloy News Brief – DMV Region Traffic Deaths Statistics 2026

According to preliminary reporting from the National Safety Council, 2025 saw a twelve percent decline in traffic fatalities nationwide. Maryland and DC led the way, racing ahead of the nation with an eye-popping fifty-two percent decline in DC (twenty-seven fewer deaths in total) and a sixteen percent decline in Maryland (ninety-four fewer deaths). Virginia also saw a slightly safer year on the roads, as it posted thirty-four fewer deaths for a four percent decrease. These statistics include cyclists, pedestrians, and passengers as well, giving a comprehensive picture of the safety of our roads.

While encouraging enough in a vacuum, these reports are even more encouraging when we consider that by every available metric, Americans are driving more than ever. This indicates that even as roads grow more crowded, people are committed  to staying safe on the roads.

Distracted Driving Leads to Traffic Deaths

According to NSC, the major driver of fatal car accidents remains distracted driving.

Distracted driving is a broad spectrum of irresponsible behaviors behind the wheel. These may include:

  • Texting, scrolling, browsing, or otherwise interacting with one’s phone
  • Adjusting the radio, climate controls, or navigation
  • Eating or drinking
  • Personal grooming
  • Talking to passengers or tending to kids in the back seat
  • Daydreaming or mentally checking out
  • Taking one’s eyes off the road
  • Attempting to retrieve items from back seats, or items fallen in between or under seats
