According to NBC4 Washington, the crash occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 17, near the intersection of Twinbrook Parkway and Chapman Avenue, close to the Twinbrook Metro station. The 44-year-old Rockville woman and her young son were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street. Both were transported to an area hospital, where the mother later died from her injuries. Her son suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver, an adult man, remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. An adult female passenger in the vehicle was not injured. The Montgomery County Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
NBC4 reported that nearby residents have raised safety concerns about the intersection for years. The crash also came during an especially deadly period for pedestrians throughout the Washington metropolitan area. NBC4 reported that it was the fifth pedestrian fatality in the DMV since the preceding weekend. At the time of the report, Maryland had recorded 45 fatal pedestrian crashes in 2026, including 10 in Montgomery County.
