When you really think about it, highway driving sounds like something out of science fiction. The dizzying speeds and snap decisions involved in navigating the DMV’s highway network are mundane to any resident of the area, but should never be taken lightly. A recent car accident in Northern Virginia has brought the consequences of momentary distraction while highway driving into stark relief. A driver’s brief lapse of attention led to an airborne car, a massive emergency response, stopped traffic, and now criminal charges. Buckle up, the Malloy news brief on this Virginia distracted driving accident has it all.
On the morning of February 11, Fairfax County fire and emergency services rushed to respond to reports of a car on the train tracks in the vicinity of Dunn Loring-Merrifield metro station.

As fire and emergency crews worked to remove the vehicle from the tracks, the Orange Line was shut down between West Falls Church and Vienna for more than two hours. Fairfax county officials also reported that the Westbound HOV Lane of I-66 was closed during the operation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that distracted driving resulted in 2,89,310 injuries and 3,308 fatalities in 2022. Additionally, the NHTSA discovered that pedestrians and cyclists, who are already at risk, are particularly vulnerable to being struck by a distracted driver. One of the main causes of the rise in mortality among vulnerable road users has been identified as distracted driving.
