What Is Maryland Auto Insurance Fund?

Invariably, I get calls from frustrated clients and they get on the phone with me and they tell me, “I was in an automobile accident and I’m dealing with this horrible insurance company I’ve never heard of and they’re impossible to deal with.” Before they can even give me the name of the insurance company, I already know who they are, The Maryland Auto Insurance Fund or better known as MAIF. This is a quasi governmental entity that was set up as the insurer last resort in Maryland.

How Does MAIF Work?

A lot of states have automobile insurance funds similar to MAIF. The function of this government entity is that if you can’t get insurance anywhere else because your driving record is not such that another insurance wants to insure you, MAIF will have to insure you. The rates are higher. Typically, your MAIF is selling the consumer a policy with the bare minimum coverage. The employees there mean well and they’re friendly enough but they appear to be very overworked and the result of that is frustration for anybody dealing with this insurance.

There was a long period of time where whenever I saw MAIF was the insurer, I just filed a suit immediately because I just knew that was the only way that I could get the attention of MAIF because they wouldn’t respond to normal avenues to get their attention. Things have gotten a little bit better but it’s not unusual for clients to find MAIF to be frustrating. So, if you’re dealing with MAIF, it might be easier for you to hire a law firm that’s used to dealing with this insurance company. There are tricks of the trade. So, speak with attorneys employ to get the best result for your personal injury claim when the insurance company of the other side is MAIF.
