History Behind The Winderbourne Mansion

Seann Malloy is here in front of the WinderBourne Mansion and this was built in 1884. It was built by Enoch and Mary Totten. If you’re in D.C Fort Totten Metro, that’s named after Enoch Totten. Additionally, the mansion is named Winderbourne and it’s named after a sewing machine, the Winder Bobbin, which was invented by Mary Totten’s Father. Lot of things happen here and it is a dark history. The drinking water of this area was bad and the three children became ill with typhoid. One of them died and later on, one of the grandchildren died in this house when she was sliding down the bannister.

There was some kind of accident, maybe she slid right off of the bannister and she died that way. So there is some dark history associated with this house. Moreover, rumor has it that the Tottens threw really good parties here, giant parties and everyone would come to them. They were well known for the ruckus all night parties that they would throw here. Right now, the house is decrypted, it’s fallen in disrepair. It’s one of the few houses in this area that was built from this time period that is still around. Above all, it reminds us of the history of Washington D.C. in the late 19th century.
