Malloy News Brief: Montgomery County Winter Weather Accidents

As bitter cold grips the DMV and the region gets its first proper taste of snow, sleet, and other winter weather, accidents are inevitable. Even the most experienced winter driver may find that their reflexes and instincts have atrophied over the spring, summer, and autumn. The same hazards which may send cars sliding along the pavement can also cause injurious slips and falls for pedestrians. No matter how you travel, the risks remain present. A moment’s complacency can lead to serious long term headaches, as some drivers in Montgomery County recently found out. Today’s Malloy news brief will cover the recent spate of winter weather accidents in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Winter Weather Accidents – 12/05/2025

On the morning of Friday, December 5th, icy and snowy road conditions resulted in “dozens” of collisions in Montgomery County. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported. But Montgomery County public schools’ decision to begin classes as normal on the 5th led to several deeply concerning reports of MCPS school buses becoming involved in accidents or suffering close calls with danger. A spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service noted that many of these school-bus related incidents did not actually result in any collisions, and were simply drivers reporting that they’d become stuck at the bottom of hills or been involved in significant slipping or sliding incidents. Of particular concern was one incident where a school bus collided with a mailbox. While children were on board at the time of the accident, none were injured.

More than a dozen collisions occurred on along the county’s I-270 corridor from Montrose Road to Shady Grove Road. One of these incidents involved as many as nine vehicles. Many local residents, especially parents of schoolchildren, took serious issue with MCPS’s decision to hold classes as normal. Many of these critics cited firsthand accounts of cars sliding or stuck on county roads.
