Have you ever shopped at an Aldi? The respected German grocery chain operates over 12,000 stores in 18 countries. From its origins in postwar reconstruction to its modern status as an iconic, multinational grocery brand, Aldi has earned a reputation for a no-frills approach to grocery shopping, resulting in savings for their customers. A favorite of college students, working families, and anyone else looking to save on their groceries, Aldi can count itself among the most influential retailers in its field. Today’s blog post will be a primer on what to expect if you suffer an Aldi slip and fall accident.

A Brief History of Aldi

Founded in 1946 by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht, the chain of discount grocers which would later become Aldi had grown to a respectable chain of 13 stores in Germany’s Ruhr Valley by 1950. The Albrecht brothers found a winning business model in their early days with a strong emphasis on keeping their outlets small and efficient. In its early days, Aldi did not stock fresh produce and removed any product which did not sell at acceptable rates from its shelves. By 1960, the brothers operated 300 stores across West Germany.

However, 1960 would also be a major event in the corporate history of Aldi. Due to disputes  between the brothers Albrecht, the nascent Aldi would be divided. Theo would take ownership of their northern holdings (Aldi Nord) and Karl would manage their southern locations (Aldi Sud). The split would be formally complete in 1966 and continues to this day, with Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud dividing their international holdings as they do their domestic ones. In an interesting bit of corporate trivia, all Aldi supermarkets in the United States are owned by Aldi Sud. In 1962, the name “Aldi” (short for Albrecht Discount) would be adopted by both chains, and both would adopt it as their formal corporate name in 1975.

Aldi operates a number of international subsidiaries. These include the Hofer chain of supermarkets in Austria and Slovenia and American chains Harvey’s and Winn-Dixie. Trader Joe’s is also an Aldi subsidiary, though an independent one. Interestingly, Trader Joe’s is also the only north American asset owned by Aldi Nord.

Steps to Navigating an Aldi Slip and Fall Accident

Put Your Health First

If you are injured, your health should be your top priority. It is not advisable to take a chance, even if your injuries are slight. In addition to providing medical care, a visit to a doctor will document the extent and source of your injuries. In the absence of documentation, insurance companies and other relevant entities can try to downplay the severity of your injuries or argue that it had nothing to do with your slip and fall.

Report Right Away

Inform Aldi employees of your injury as soon as you can. Make sure the incident is reported in writing, and ask for a copy of the report for your files.

Record the Scene

A personal injury lawsuit will be strengthened from photos taken at the scene of the accident, particularly of any potential dangers that may have contributed to your injuries. These could consist of:

  • Wet flooring
  • Floor cracks
  • Rugs or mats that are not properly fastened
  • Improperly stocked merchandise
  • Trash or general debris left in pathway
